Trademark Renewal in the UAE: Renewal Period, Process, Costs & What Happens If You Miss It

A registered trademark can be an important business asset, protecting the brand identity associated with your products or services. However, trademark registration is not indefinite. Businesses need to monitor expiry dates and complete renewal procedures within the applicable period.

In the UAE, trademark renewal applications are handled through the Ministry of Economy's official service.

When should you renew a UAE trademark?

The Ministry of Economy's published renewal service states that an application should be submitted during the tenth year of the protection period, or within a maximum of six months after the protection period ends.

The late-renewal window should not be treated as an extension to rely on routinely. Build a reminder well before expiry so there is time to prepare the documents and submit the application.

What are the UAE trademark renewal fees?

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism publishes its renewal fees on the official service page. The amount depends on when you renew. Renewing in the final year of protection costs less than renewing in the six-month late window. A separate publication fee also applies.

Some applicants may qualify for reductions. Fees can change, so confirm the current amount on the Ministry’s portal before you submit.

How do you renew a trademark?

The Ministry's published process involves these steps:

    1. Sign in to the Ministry of Economy's website.
    2. Select the trademark renewal service.
    3. Complete the application and upload the required documents.
    4. Pay the applicable fee electronically.
    5. Follow the service instructions and retain the renewed registration records.

The listed documents include the trademark registration certificate, a commercial licence for companies or institutions inside the UAE, and a legal power of attorney when applying through a registration agent.

What happens if you miss the renewal deadline?

Missing the ordinary renewal period can create a risk to the continuity of your trademark protection. The Ministry provides a late-renewal window of up to six months after the protection period ends, subject to the published requirements and fees.

Do not assume that renewal remains available indefinitely after that window. If the deadline has passed, consult the Ministry's current rules and seek appropriate trademark advice about the status of the registration and any available next steps.

Keep your brand protection on schedule

Trademark deadlines are easy to overlook while managing everyday business operations. Maintain a central register of trademark numbers, owners, renewal dates and supporting documents, and assign responsibility for checking upcoming deadlines.
